The Liquid Gold of the Mediterranean: Olive Oil

This golden liquid from the fertile lands of the Mediterranean is known for its contributions to our meals and health. Olive oil is not just any oil; it is also a carrier of a cultural and healthful story. Here are the wonders and flavorful secrets of olive oil…

History and Origin of Olive Oil

The olives grown in the warm climate of the Mediterranean have been a source of flavor adorning humanity’s tables for centuries. Did you know that in some cultures, olive oil is considered a precious gift exchanged between people? From ancient times to the present day, olive oil has been used for health, beauty, and flavor. Even today, its value remains undiminished. The most obvious traces of olive oil can be seen in Crete. Mediterranean, Anatolia and Aegean have been the main lands of Olive Oil.

Olives were important in every period of history. In the Athens Constitution written by Aristotle, it is mentioned that those who cut down or harm olive trees will be subject to punishment. In mythology, the olive tree held great significance. According to legend, in Greek mythology, olive trees were under the protection of Zeus, while in Egyptian mythology, the goddess Isis provided humanity with the knowledge needed to cultivate, harvest, and consume olives.

The olive, considered sacred by the Egyptians, was believed to be the food that pharaohs would eat in their passage to the afterlife. Hieroglyphs often depict the olive tree, its branches, and olives themselves. Decorations made from olive branches were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, showcasing the importance of olives in ancient Egyptian beliefs.

Today, this valuable plant has become the symbol of peace. In short, olive oil has accompanied us from history to the present day. Throughout history, it has been a symbol of peace and prosperity in Mediterranean cultures.

You can easily use olive oil from dishes to enhancing your beauty. Let’s take a closer look at the most precious jewel of Mediterranean culture, which perfects the taste of the dishes it joins, heals the skin it touches, and brings radiance – olive oil.

While there are many varieties of olive oil, I would like to talk about the one I use the most: extra virgin olive oil. Natural extra virgin olive oil is the most perfect type of olive oil. Olive Oil in the Kitchen:

Firstly, I want to talk about the simplest form in which you can experience olive oil: a piece of bread and olive oil. When you visit a true Mediterranean restaurant in the heart of summer, it’s a tradition to be served olive oil and bread as a prelude to your main meal. This simple duo is a wonderful flavor that can be enjoyed in every meal in many Mediterranean countries. If you also have sun-ripened tomatoes from the Mediterranean sun, this flavor can reach even higher levels. Luckily, even if you were in Belgium, it’s not too far away for us to access these flavors. While reading this blog, if you have these ingredients at home, you can easily prepare yourself a simple olive oil-tomato-bread trio and continue reading where you left off. I’m actually ready to share many Mediterrenean cuisine recipes with you right now, but if I do, this article will become very long. I will include these in future posts. For now, I’d like to briefly examine the place of olive oil in Mediterranean cuisine.

You can use olive oil in sautéing, frying, grilling, baking, and all other cooking methods. Olive oil allows the ingredients in the dish to absorb the added spices, enhances the flavors of appetizers, and gives desserts a light yet irresistible taste. In addition to the magnificent flavor born from the combination of olive oil and tomatoes, I will give you a secret. If you consume olive oil and tomatoes together, it is concluded that olive oil enhances the effect of “Lycopene,” the antioxidant property in tomatoes. I am not calling the Mediterranean the cradle of this oil for no reason. There is no possibility of any dish with olive oil being tasteless. Since our topic is olive oil, I will not go into many recipe details for now. In my upcoming content, I will talk to you about plenty of Mediterranean dishes with olive oil:).

Beauty with Olive Oil

I’ll tell you: of course, it’s olive oil! One of history’s most beautiful women, Cleopatra, was also a Mediterranean woman, and her secret was olive oilJ

1. If you make an olive oil hair mask on your hair ends before taking a shower, you won’t believe the shine in your hair. But at this point, I want to warn you: use shampoo before wetting your hair with water, then rinse. This way, your hair will be free of oil.

2. Moisturize your hands with olive oil. This way, your dry areas will be moisturized in a healthy way.

3. Did you know that you can remove your makeup with olive oil? Yes! If you are used to a two-step makeup removal process, you might be familiar with this technique.
